THE TRANSE MUTANTS :
Twenty years of artistic activities. Encounters, associations, companies, creations, training-courses, journeys and detours…in one word, TURMOIL. And one has to keep it up and keep going! Everything is done so that the necessary steps taken “out of bounds” are hushed up, smothered in discouragement and fatalism. A question of period and society - the in-thing - atmosphere, conservatism…a question of culture! Twenty years in order to understand that we had no intention of heading for civilization but for THE SHARING OF ADVENTURE. Indeed, no Cultural heritage with… capital letters.. No, rough and dusty monuments serving to sterilize what can upset and stir you into vibration: please don’t disturb!
What one gains by confronting all this is initiation. One target: dare go off the beaten track; extirpate oneself from the socio-cultural, the exotic, the art of the State, the burden of work and sheer entertainment.
Against the usual current, the common meaning, the normal culture, not by pure prefabricated anti-conformism but because it is the only way to discover oneself and feel what is most important versus what refers instead to fantasy and repetition. Take the virgin paths and the obscure ones as well. DARE dance along with your own fears. No subsidies for such a journey. One has to depend on oneself only.
All this has taught us our job and developed our experience as artists.
1/Censorship nowadays doesn’t consist in taking a work of art away from the market, but in making sure that it never reaches the market.
2/ Recuperation and commercial or institutional “instrumentalisation” threatens anyone of us.
3/ The worst conformists are ourselves.
Our narcissistic self, consistent at the beginning, has dwindled away bur we can breathe better ever since!
And now? Even if we are mistaken, we can and must rush on somewhere else!
Inspiration without crossbreeding, merging, gluing, multi-disciplinarity. Just INSPIRED! We let ourselves be inspired! The Transe-mutants is not a ready-made article of diversity and cultural identity. Dancing, music, Brazil, Cuba, Africa, India, martial arts, classical or modern performances, improvisations, Buto, crumping, red or black wheat, violins, vowels, wood..No strategy: PASSION! If we are precise it is because we are IMPASSIONED! So often were we told when we were small that we had to choose between Art and Administration, between arts subjects, literature and science, between work and pleasure that now we can write while we dance, we imagine things while scribbling, we learn by failing….We are no specialists, we know how to manage with bits and pieces, with remains.
Capturing of the tiniest movements of the world: WE DRIFT! Outside Art. Artists have lost their “punch”, they are afraid. Silent censorship, precariousness, ideological lead weight, criticism, permanent castration, self censorship, perversity of the subsidies and grants etc. Result: when one thinks artists, casual workers are what come next to your mind. And here we are reduced to some kind of trade and are the last fools indeed to think ourselves free.
Eli Logel told me one day: “Don’t ever let administration manage your art! Just make sure that your art manages administration, otherwise you will collapse without realizing what is happening to you (or too late finding out) into sheer bureaucratic art”… Eli Logel was right.
Between SACEM ( Rights Society), SACD ( Union of Authors, Composers and Editors), UNESCO, Associate Choreographs, CND (National Dance Centre) Ministries and Departments, Town Halls, Subsidized places, URSAAF ( Social security and family allowance payments) ASSEDIC (French unemployment benefits department), Psychiatric hospitals… where have we finally ended up? Whatever the political side or the profession of faith, the bureaucratic spirit has spread.. Suddenly we understood why we couldn’t find our place in culture, art or exploitation: MOVING ON WE HAD ACTUALLY BURNT OUR IDENTITY CARD
Twenty years of rage, frustration, hassle, fierce battling, intransigence. Twenty years of CURSE! So? No regrets. We’re doing it once more. Despite the worrying and murky period our societies are going through or not, our process is meeting with more and more FEEDBACK. We must admit that the reception outside the Hexagon is particularly welcoming. And it is so amusing to hear people say: “ Well, you at least are not afraid of making shit ! We thought that France was mainly Descartes, Louis XIV, the Revolution, Napoleon, literature, contemporary art, fashion, Declaration of Human Rights! But you are definitely anti-humanists, eclectic, weird, out of frames and limits, wild, chaotic! You don’t belong to any sort of category and you couldn’t care less about good taste and criticism! You must be Russian, Niggers and Apache!” And here is how a myth collapses… I have a question : “What is France exactly?” Personally I have never been able to answer.
Chemical emulsion. Energetic journey. Body in one act. And the human theatre falls to pieces to free a site: the Universe/ the World. Never mind Europe, the democrats, the elite, the normopaths! Back to KHORA! To chaos, to the unintelligible! PIM-POM-PIM, PIM-POM-PIM!!!! Careful: a sect! All step into the breach! France is in danger! Don’t forget: we are rational, conservative and dogmatic! Our identity is attacked by a thing! A thing against reason, a thing against secularity, a thing against man! Beware! Be afraid!
